Gaming Landscape in New Brunswick
New Brunswick operates one of the more tightly organized provincial gambling systems in Canada. The whole structure leans on Crown corporations, private companies working under service contracts, and a dedicated regulatory branch. Gambling is only legal if it is conducted and managed by the province itself or by an entity authorized under the Gaming Control Act, which closely follows paragraph 207(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
The New Brunswick Lotteries and Gaming Corporation (NBLGC) was created on June 26, 2008. It does not run casinos or lotteries on its own. Instead, it signs service agreements with private operators and acts as the province’s shareholder in the Atlantic Lottery Corporation. Oversight of regulation, licensing, and compliance sits with the Gaming, Liquor and Security Licensing Branch within the Department of Public Safety, which supervises both casino operations and charitable gaming.
Two land-based casinos are active in the province. Casino New Brunswick opened its doors in May 2010 in Moncton, at 21 Casino Drive. It is operated by Great Canadian Gaming (New Brunswick) Ltd. on behalf of the NBLGC. Grey Rock Casino started up later, in March 2015, located on the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation in Edmundston, and is run by Grey Rock Entertainment Centre Inc. It follows the same Crown-corporation service model.
| Casino | Location | Opened | Operator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casino New Brunswick | Moncton, NB | May 2010 | Great Canadian Gaming (NB) Ltd. |
| Grey Rock Casino | Edmundston, NB | March 2015 | Grey Rock Entertainment Centre Inc. |
Online Gaming Through ALC
In the online space, New Brunswick relies on the Atlantic Lottery Corporation. ALC delivers digital gambling on behalf of New Brunswick alongside three other Atlantic provinces: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The only authorized website is alc.ca, and residents use this platform to access casino-style games, purchase lottery tickets, and place sports wagers.
Opening an online account is a simple, fairly standard process. A player visits alc.ca or installs the ALC mobile app, then completes registration with their name, date of birth, address, and basic contact information. A confirmation email follows and needs to be verified. Once the account is active, the player chooses either the Casino or Sports section, heads into the My Account area, selects a deposit option, and adds funds. Any winnings appear in the account balance and can be withdrawn through the same account settings page.
Private offshore or domestic online operators are not authorized to target New Brunswick players at this time. As of 2026, the provincial government has been reviewing whether to bring in private operators, drawing on the approaches taken in Ontario and British Columbia. However, no new law or final policy has been put in place. Until the province makes a formal change, ALC remains the sole authorized online gambling provider for New Brunswick residents.
VLTs and Retail Products
Video lottery terminals form a visible part of New Brunswick’s retail gambling scene. Certain establishments such as restaurants, bars, and other licensed liquor venues can host VLTs, but only after ALC approval and completion of the Video Lottery Siteholder Registration. Having a liquor licence is not enough by itself; each site must satisfy ALC’s criteria before any machines are installed.
Retail sports betting and lottery products also move through the ALC network. Traditional draw-based lottery tickets and instant-win scratch cards are available at authorized retailers throughout the province. These land-based offerings sit apart from the online platform but still operate within the same management and oversight structure at ALC.
| Product Type | Channel | Managed By |
|---|---|---|
| Online casino games | alc.ca | Atlantic Lottery Corporation |
| Sports betting (online) | alc.ca | Atlantic Lottery Corporation |
| Traditional lottery tickets | Retail outlets | Atlantic Lottery Corporation |
| Instant-win scratch cards | Retail outlets | Atlantic Lottery Corporation |
| Video lottery terminals | Approved venues | Atlantic Lottery Corporation |
| Casino table games and slots | Casino NB / Grey Rock | Great Canadian Gaming / Grey Rock Entertainment |
On the retail side, not every lottery seller offers every product. Some locations may focus on draw tickets, others on scratch cards. Players who want something specific often check the ALC website first, which usually avoids a wasted trip.
